What changes within us when we are among horses?
Being among horses awakens in us an endless range of sensations and emotions, while others quiet down, even becoming silenced, bringing back the pleasant feeling of being present.
When we are among a herd, we don’t just feel presence… we feel something deeper, difficult to explain, but impossible to ignore. Horses awaken something within us: it is like admiration, a quiet and curious attraction, an innate respect, presence and calm, mixed with inner tingling of tenderness and fascination.
Without a doubt, it is a powerful animal, with tremendous strength and extreme sensitivity.
They act as an emotional mirror
Horses perceive our emotional state and respond to what we feel, inviting us to be ourselves—transparent and authentic. When we are among them, we cannot pretend, as they reflect back an honest image of our inner state. They sense our emotional states and react to them: if we feel fear, they will show that fear and insecurity; if we are nervous, they will become uneasy; and if we show calmness and openness, their response will be a slow and curious approach.
Without a doubt, they show us our own vulnerability if we are able to listen attentively and silently.
Presence and connection with the present moment
When we are among horses, we feel their rhythm—a rhythm free from haste—that almost without noticing invites us to slow down, to forget urgency, and to enter a calmer and more conscious state. It is as if, little by little, we tune into their way of inhabiting the world.
Their cautious and attentive presence surrounds us; they observe us without judgment and support us with that steady calm. In that shared space, something within us begins to settle. We reconnect with the ground, the body, the breath… and from there we can begin to truly feel. Not from the rushed mind, but from our own presence.
The rhythm of horses slows us down in an almost imperceptible yet powerful way. And in that process, we can experience how time, as we know it, seems to dissolve. We stop running and, for a moment, we simply are.
They connect us with nature and the ancestral
Horses have something difficult to name—a quality that goes beyond what is visible. There is in them a presence that feels ancient, intuitive, deeply connected to the earth and nature. Something that awakens in us a distant memory, as if we recognized in their gaze or energy a forgotten part of our own human history.
This connection brings us back to the present. Without words, they remind us how far we have drifted from the natural rhythm of life and from ourselves. At the same time, they offer us the opportunity to return, to reconnect with that more intuitive, simpler, and more authentic part of ourselves.
Being with them is, in a way, a reunion—with nature, with what is essential, and with ourselves.
Emotional benefit
When we are among them and become part of their world, something changes within us, as if something internal were readjusting: mental noise decreases, worries fade, and the mind pauses. Breathing becomes calmer and deeper, and little by little we enter a more attuned state.
As this happens, the feeling of calm, confidence, and inner safety increases. We feel more present, more connected to ourselves and to everything around us. And from this place, from this calmer state, we can experience a more authentic and lasting sense of well-being.
And you? When was the last time you allowed yourself to stop and simply feel yourself?
